In 1901, Charleston hosted the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, a bold attempt to spark economic revival and attract national attention. Though the fair fell short financially and didn’t draw the crowds organizers had hoped for, it showed the city’s resilient spirit. Even in the face of disappointment, Charleston used the experience to strengthen its identity and lay the groundwork for future growth.
